Building impromptu forts in public spaces is an experiment in play. Forts are distinctly personal spaces built in spontaneous moments of joy. They gently delineate private and public realms while responding intimately to their surrounding environment for structural inspiration. Not only does a fort invoke a magical space, but once within, it redefines the outside by revealing just how sterile and programmatic our public environments really are. It is an oasis of security and whimsy in a world of authority and hard surfaces. Constructing forts in car dealerships, schools, and grocery stores was some of the best fun I've ever had.
